The Mystery of Babylon the Great

Revelation 17:4-5 (KJV)

4 And the woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet colour, and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand full of abominations and filthiness of her fornication:

The Context

Revelation 17:1-3 (KJV)
1 And there came one of the seven angels which had the seven vials, and talked with me, saying unto me, Come hither; I will shew unto thee the judgment of the great whore that sitteth upon many waters:
2 With whom the kings of the earth have committed fornication, and the inhabitants of the earth have been made drunk with the wine of her fornication.
3 So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness: and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet coloured beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns.

•       The Great Whore – the kingdom of the antichrist.

•       Fornication (porneo) – spiritual unfaithfulness.

•       Scarlet Beast – the final form of the kingdom of man.

•       The Woman Riding the Beast – a vile representation of the best human civilization can offer.

Revelation 17:15 (KJV)

And he saith unto me, The waters which thou sawest, where the whore sitteth, are peoples, and multitudes, and nations, and tongues.

  • Throughout the Bible there is a conflict between Babel representing the plan of man/Satan, and Jerusalem representing the plan of God.

What is so mysterious about Babylon?

•       (mysterion), “mystery, secret; something previously unknown or unrevealed.”

•       The sign is on her forehead labels her intrinsic character.

•       The “unrevealed” matter is that her intrinsic character is not known except by divine revelation.

Future of Babylon

  • Isaiah 13:19, “And Babylon, the glory of kingdoms, the beauty of the Chaldeans’ pride, will be as when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah.
  • Isaiah 13:20, “It will never be inhabited, nor will it be settled from generation to generation; nor will the Arabian pitch tents there, nor will the shepherds make their sheepfolds there.
  • Rev. 14:8, “And another angel followed, saying, ‘Babylon is fallen, is fallen, that great city, because she has made all nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication.’ ”
  • Is. 21:9, “‘And look, here comes a chariot of men with a pair of horsemen!’ Then he answered and said, ‘Babylon is fallen, is fallen! And all the carved images of her gods He has broken to the ground.’ ”
  • Jer. 51:8, “Babylon has suddenly fallen and been destroyed. Wail for her! Take balm for her pain; perhaps she may be healed.”
