The Mysteries of The Bible - Part 2

January 13, 2019

The Mysteries of God

1 Corinthians 4:1 (ESV)

This is how one should regard us, as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God.

Servants (hupēretēs) means an under-rower. It refers to the slaves who sat in the belly of the large ships and pulled at the great oars to carry the boat through the sea. Christ is the Master of the ship and the minister is one of the slaves of Christ.

Stewards (oikonomois) means the overseer of an estate. The steward was always a slave, subject to a master, but he was placed in charge of the other slaves throughout the master's house or estate.

  • Mysteries (mysterion) – knowledge that has been concealed but is now being revealed.
  • Knowledge related to the Church Age and the spiritual life of the Believer in the Church Age.
  • The mysteries of God refer to God’s wisdom which is the message of the Cross known only by the Spirit’s revelation.
  • The Cross of Jesus Christ is the only means of Salvation.

Matthew 10:38 (ESV)

And whoever does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me.

Matthew 16:24 (ESV)

Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.

Colossians 1:19-20 (ESV

19 For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell,

20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.

Colossians 2:13-14 (ESV)

13 And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses,

14 by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross.

Hebrews 12:2 (NASB)

fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

  • A successful spiritual life in the Church Age requires an understanding of the Cross.

  • The Cross is always an instrument of death.

  • To take up one’s Cross is to die daily to self and follow Christ.

  • The Mystery of God is the Message of the Cross.
